In 1985 Sylka encountered Oriental Dance in the shape of the American dancer Feyrouz. Inspired and nurtured by Feyrouz, the talent of Sylka developed at a breath-taking speed.
As well as intensive training with international professors of Oriental Dance, she received instruction in ballet, Modern Dance, Flamenco and, above all, African Dance.
Her journeys to Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and Senegal were particularly influencial.
In 1990 Sylka, together with her colleague Fidi, took over the running of the dance-studio Oasis. Many years of experience in dance instruction have made Sylka a popular work-shop teacher.
Sylka disposes of a highly varied repertoire. From classical oriental dance, the "Raks Sharqi" and "Baladi" (typical Egyptian dance style), through Double-veil-, Lustrous- and Gypsy-Dance to the playing of finger cymbals.
Her speciality is a very individual and expressive fusion of Oriental and African Dance, with which she has had much success in her own productions. A number of these productions were realised in co-operation with the Egyptian percussionist Sayed Balaha and other artists.
Sylka Rubina is not only active as a solo-dancer. She has given a great deal of impetus to the ever-growing "oriental scene" in Germany, and has contributed much to the development of Oriental Dance and its acceptance as a significant art-form.
Out of numerous encounters with artists from different parts of the world many projects have emerged. She has been involved in a large number of productions all the way through from the initial idea to the final performance. Having started with more traditional stage-shows like "Saghriet" (1990-1991), Sylka quickly began to develop and progress along a different path. O.D. joined elements of Variete (Magic fire of the Orient ñ show in 1992) or combined with aspects of other cultures as in the Afro-Oriental Music and Dance Encounters "A step over Sahara" (1992) or "In the shadow of Baobab" (1993).
In 1994 a successful fusion of oriental and modern dance was created with the "Bolero Oriental", which was performed as a 75min dance show for the first time in 1995. The show met with widespread acclaim from an enthusiastic public. Following this success Sylka developed the dance-theater "Re-Egypta" (1998), together with the Oasis Danse Ensemble.
This again proved fruitful and led to further shows, including "Music and Dance of the Nile" (2000), and "Hip Drop Hurra" (2001). Since 2002 Sylka has been the co-organiser of the "Oriental Motion Club". In October 2003 the UFA-Fabrik in Berlin will host the first "Berlin Oriental Cultural Festival".
Today Sylka Rubina is one of the most renowned and accomplished dancers in Germany. She puts on a broad range of oriental events and is an important pillar of the successful Oasis Danse Ensemble.
